What makes a successful athlete, a successful musician, actor, a successful teacher or accountant or plumber? What makes a successful leader? Practice. Repetition. Study. For the football player it’s lifting weights to increase strength, it’s running and exercising to increase endurance, it’s study of the film and the playbook, it’s practice and practice and more practice. Similarly, musicians replay the scales over and over and over. Success flows from doing the hard work when the spotlights aren’t shining.

Question:

As a leader, what skills/abilities must be accessible in the moment? How do you sharpen those skills between games? To borrow from athletes and performers – what’s practice for you? What’s repetition for you? How do you increase your ability to be effective when no one is looking? Do you have a practice plan? What will you do to create one and how will you find the discipline to follow it?
