Like it or not, employees talk about the boss. Yes…about you! I wonder what descriptive words your people use for you. Do their words match your intentions? One attribute many leaders desire but clumsily execute is ‘supportive.’
What can you expect from your direct reports when your everyday question is, “What do you need from me?” How do you respond when they need something tangible – a strategy, an idea, a plan, training, resources, etc.? How do you respond when they need something intangible – space to operate, time to think, freedom to fail, etc.? How does your response to “What do you need from me” impact their energy level, their effectiveness and their future with the organization?
