Recently Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg said the most important criteria he has when hiring an executive is whether he, Mark, would work for that person. That’s got me thinking about the makeup of executive teams. If not Zuckerberg’s approach, then at a minimum I suggest – hire with the intent of replacing yourself.

Question:

What changes when you commit to yourself that EACH of your direct reports will be able to replace you in less than five years? How will you hire? How will you empower, encourage, mentor, guide, challenge, resource, to ensure their readiness to succeed you? How will having that talent pool across your senior team impact your organization’s results this year?
